At the mobilization meeting for the UHV transmission and transformation project and the 750 kV project summary commendation event held by China Xidian Group, one of China's top 100 electric manufacturing companies, Xichang Company was honored with the highest award. This achievement not only highlights the outstanding performance of the three 750 kV transformers with independent intellectual property rights in the project but also marks a significant leap in the company’s scientific research, management, and manufacturing capabilities.
Looking back at over 50 years of China’s power development, the westward shift has always been a key chapter. The modern development of China’s power grid cannot be separated from the western region. In September this year, Xichang, known for creating several first-of-its-kind state-owned enterprises in China’s power history, once again captured global attention. It was the official commissioning of China’s first 750 kV ultra-high voltage transmission line—the Guanting to Lanzhou East 750 kV transmission and transformation demonstration project.
In this world-class demonstration project, which set multiple global records, Xichang Company’s three 750 kV single-phase autotransformers were developed and manufactured independently. Their international advanced design and compact, elegant appearance received full recognition from experts and leaders of Guodian Company, making them a “demonstration product†in the project. These transformers are expected to serve as a model for future million-volt transformers.
With the successful operation of the 750 kV project in the northwest, China ended its era of power grids without voltage levels above 500 kV. Xichang Company proved that “Made in China†can achieve international standards through independent innovation. As the saying goes, “No rain, no rainbow.†This journey not only reflects the company’s perseverance but also celebrates its achievements.
In the first half of 2002, Xichang Company, which had long ranked among the top three in the industry, suffered losses exceeding 10 million yuan. This downturn created tension and frustration among staff. In response, on July 30th, the company held its first second-generation staff meeting, where the newly appointed leadership team analyzed the current situation and future challenges. Based on these insights, a new strategy for revitalizing the company was proposed, focusing on innovation, technological advancement, and market expansion.
The company initiated reforms in enterprise management, increased R&D investment, and focused on developing high-tech, high-value, and high-market-share products. A new marketing system was introduced, and efforts were made to improve employee morale and cohesion. These changes laid the foundation for overcoming the company’s challenges.
To support the “three highs†strategy, Xichang Company undertook extensive equipment upgrades. Despite financial constraints, they optimized their “10th Five-Year†technical reform plan, ensuring efficient use of resources. They implemented 77 major technical projects, including new production lines and improved testing systems, which enhanced both production capacity and product quality.
The company also emphasized the importance of skilled workers, investing in training and competitions to build a strong workforce. These efforts contributed to the successful production of high-grade transformers.
In August 2003, Xichang signed a contract with Guodian Northwest Company to supply three 750 kV/500 MVA single-phase autotransformers for the Lanzhou East Substation. This marked a milestone in China’s power industry, driven by innovation and strategic planning.
Although 750 kV transmission lines have existed in Canada, the former Soviet Union, and the US since the late 1960s, the northwest project is the highest-altitude UHV project globally. Its harsh environment required insulation equivalent to millions of volts in plains. With limited time—less than two years from approval to operation—Xichang Company demonstrated remarkable preparation and execution.
The company formed a dedicated research team to tackle key technologies, laying a solid foundation for the project. By adopting advanced international techniques and integrating them with existing expertise, they achieved a breakthrough in 750 kV transformer design.
During manufacturing, Xichang implemented strict quality control, involving daily inspections, training, and rigorous testing. The test center conducted independent research and successfully completed all required tests. This commitment to quality earned praise from domestic and international experts.
Looking ahead, the 11th Five-Year Plan emphasizes the importance of equipment manufacturing, supporting localization and technological innovation. Xichang Company continues to pursue international standards, achieving significant growth in output and market share.
Recently, Xichang won a contract for six 800 kV UHV shunt reactors for the Laxiwa Hydropower Station, further proving its capabilities. The 750 kV project has paved the way for China’s UHV grid development, setting the stage for a national 1000 kV network.
As China moves toward a more advanced power grid, the next 15 years will be critical. For Xichang Company, this is an opportunity to become a global leader. With continuous innovation and determination, the company is ready to face the challenges and seize the future.
