In recognition of its outstanding contributions to the UHV transmission and transformation project and the 750 kV project, Xichang Company, a top 100 electric manufacturing company in China, was honored with the highest award at the commendation meeting held by China Xidian Group. This achievement highlights not only the significant role played by Xichang’s three 750 kV transformers with independent intellectual property rights in the project, but also marks a major leap forward in the company's scientific research, management, and manufacturing capabilities. Looking back over more than 50 years of power development in China, the westward shift has been a pivotal chapter. The modern development of China’s power grid cannot be separated from the western region. In September this year, Xichang, known for creating several first-of-its-kind state-owned enterprises in China’s power history, once again captured global attention. The country’s first 750 kV ultra-high voltage transmission line—the Guanting to Lanzhou East 750 kV transmission and transformation demonstration project—was officially put into operation, marking a milestone in China’s power infrastructure. Within this groundbreaking project, Xichang Company’s three 750 kV single-phase autotransformer power transformers, developed independently, were designed with international advanced standards. Their compact and elegant design received full recognition from experts and leaders of Guodian Company, making them a “demonstration product” within the project. These transformers are expected to become a model for future million-volt transformers. The successful operation of the 750 kV project in the northwest marked the end of China’s era of power grids without voltage levels above 500 kV. Xichang Company demonstrated that Chinese-made 750 kV transformers, through independent innovation, have reached international advanced levels. As the saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” This journey of creation is both a testament to perseverance and a symbol of glory. In the first half of 2002, Xichang Company, which had long ranked among the top three in the industry, faced losses exceeding 10 million yuan. This downturn led to growing anxiety among staff. In response, the company held its first second-generation staff meeting on July 30, just one month after a new leadership team took over. They conducted a comprehensive analysis of the domestic and international power industry landscape, identifying challenges and opportunities. Based on these insights, a revitalization strategy was proposed, focusing on future growth and realistic development plans. To drive progress, the company initiated three key strategies: innovating enterprise management mechanisms, increasing investment in science and technology, and developing high-tech, high-added-value, and high-market-share products. It also aimed to enhance marketing efforts and improve employee morale by fostering a positive work culture and addressing staff concerns. Overcoming the challenges of the “three highs” required significant technological upgrades. Despite limited funding, the leadership made strategic adjustments, prioritizing critical projects and improving the effectiveness of the “10th Five-Year” technical reform plan. Key equipment was evaluated, and numerous technical transformation projects were launched, including the addition of a 250-ton iron core stacking platform and new production lines for fuel tank coatings and reactor components. These efforts not only created favorable conditions for manufacturing 750 kV demonstration project components but also strengthened the company’s overall capacity for future growth. Recognizing the importance of skilled workers, the company focused on cultivating a team of highly skilled operators through training, competitions, and incentive systems. In August 2003, Xichang Company signed a contract with Guodian Northwest Company to supply three 750kV/500MVA single-phase autotransformer power transformers for the Lanzhou East Substation. This project represented a significant step forward in China’s high-voltage technology and underscored the company’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Although 750 kV transmission lines existed in Canada, the former Soviet Union, and the United States since the late 1960s, the Northwest 750 kV demonstration project stands out as the highest-altitude UHV project globally. Its harsh operating conditions demand insulation levels equivalent to those of millions of volts in plains. With limited time and international reference technologies, Xichang Company managed to complete the project in under two years, showcasing its preparation and determination. Opportunity favors the prepared. While the national 750 kV grid construction was still in the planning stages, Xichang Company formed a dedicated team to tackle key technologies, laying a solid foundation for the project’s success. The company integrated advanced international technologies, ensuring reliability and performance in its 750 kV transformers. During manufacturing, the company implemented strict quality control measures, from production organization to testing and commissioning. Quality supervision teams ensured every component met the highest standards, while daily inspections and corrective actions helped eliminate potential issues. With ISO9001 standards in place, Xichang Company maintained rigorous quality control throughout the production process, earning praise from both local and international experts. The company’s commitment to quality and innovation has significantly boosted its reputation and capabilities. Recently, Xichang Company secured a contract to produce six 800 kV UHV shunt reactors for the Laxiwa Hydropower Station, further demonstrating its expertise in high-voltage equipment. As China continues to develop its UHV grid, Xichang Company is positioned to play a leading role in the future of power transmission. With the national economy growing and electricity demand rising, Xichang Company faces both opportunities and challenges. From 330 kV to 500 kV and now 750 kV, the company has consistently driven innovation in power transmission and transformation, making “Made in China” proud. As the saying goes, “The road to success is never easy.” For Xichang Company, each achievement is a milestone, but it is also the beginning of a new journey. With independent innovation and a strong vision, the company is ready to take on the next challenge and continue shaping the future of China’s power industry.
