Gate valves are typically selected when the media requires a full-bore, low-pressure-loss flow. When fully open, the gate allows the medium to pass with minimal resistance, making it ideal for applications where the valve remains either fully open or fully closed for extended periods. They are not suitable for frequent operation or as throttling devices, since partial opening can cause vibration in the gate, potentially damaging the sealing surfaces and leading to erosion from the flowing medium. The primary difference between gate valves lies in their sealing elements. Common types include wedge gate valves, parallel gate valves, parallel double gate valves, and wedge double gate valves. Among these, wedge and parallel gate valves are the most widely used. In contrast, globe valves feature a stem that moves perpendicular to the seat, allowing for a short stroke and reliable shut-off. Once the disc is lifted off the seat, the sealing surfaces no longer make contact, reducing wear and enabling easier maintenance without removing the entire valve from the pipeline. This makes globe valves well-suited for both shut-off and flow regulation. However, the change in flow direction through the valve increases its resistance compared to other types. Common globe valve designs include angle globe valves, which reduce pressure drop by limiting directional changes, and DC (Y-type) globe valves, which streamline the flow path to minimize turbulence. Plunger globe valves use a plunger mechanism with elastic seals, offering flexibility in material choices and the ability to regulate flow when properly configured. Butterfly valves feature a disc that rotates within the pipe, with a 90-degree movement to fully open or close. Their simple, compact design makes them lightweight and easy to operate, with minimal pressure loss when fully open. They come in two main types: wafer and flanged, each suited for different installation needs. Butterfly valves are commonly used in large-diameter applications and across various industries, including water treatment and power generation. Ball valves, derived from plug valves, use a spherical body with a bore that aligns with the flow when fully open. They offer quick operation, tight shut-off, and low resistance. While traditionally used for on/off control, modern ball valves can also be designed for throttling. Their compact structure and versatility make them suitable for a wide range of media, including corrosive substances and gases. Check valves, such as swing and lift types, automatically prevent backflow. Swing check valves use a hinged disc that opens with flow and closes when flow reverses, while lift check valves rely on a disc that rises and falls with pressure. Both provide reliable unidirectional flow but differ in pressure drop and flow characteristics. Control valves adjust parameters like pressure and flow by modifying the area between the disc and seat. They can be self-driven (e.g., pressure relief valves) or power-driven (e.g., electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic). These valves play a crucial role in process control systems, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
