The Fifth World Water Assembly Equipment Exhibition offered a valuable opportunity for us to gain insights into advanced foreign technologies and best practices in the water treatment industry. Over the past two decades, China's water treatment equipment sector has gradually matured. However, to match the technological standards of developed countries, we must continuously enhance our R&D capabilities while strategically adopting and adapting foreign technologies that were introduced in the late 1990s.
Currently, the gap between China’s water treatment equipment and its international counterparts is more pronounced than the gap in general water infrastructure or in theoretical research versus manufacturing. Improving the level of water treatment equipment is crucial for advancing China’s water industry, as it directly impacts the success of projects and long-term operations.
Engineering experience over the years has shown that the proper functioning of water treatment equipment is fundamental to achieving desired outcomes. The quality and durability of this equipment are decisive factors in project success, and its cost significantly influences the overall project budget. Moreover, innovations in water treatment equipment play a key role in driving the development of new technologies, offering complementary and enhancing effects.
As such, equipment remains the cornerstone of successful water treatment projects, a view widely accepted within the industry. Water treatment equipment is generally categorized into general and special types. General equipment includes pumps, fans, and valves, while special equipment—focusing on critical areas like pollution control, sludge handling, aeration, disinfection, and dewatering—represents the core of water treatment research. In recent years, additional categories such as membrane technology, energy-saving systems, and sludge management have also gained importance.
Looking ahead, the development of new special equipment in water treatment should emphasize humanization, environmental sustainability, and modernization. Key focus areas include sludge disposal, odor control, disinfection methods, water recycling, energy efficiency, and the enhancement of traditional systems. These advancements reflect the evolving needs of the industry and the push toward more efficient and eco-friendly solutions.
In terms of process and equipment, the process dictates the choice of equipment, while the equipment ensures the process runs smoothly. The trend in China’s water treatment industry shows a shift from imported equipment to locally produced alternatives, with configurations becoming more user-friendly, environmentally conscious, and technologically advanced. This transition not only reflects modernization but also helps reduce costs, improve energy efficiency, and ensure operational reliability.
After years of dedicated efforts, China has made significant progress in standardizing technical specifications and design principles for water treatment equipment. With continued investment and development during the "11th Five-Year Plan," it is expected that China’s water treatment equipment will soon reach internationally competitive levels.
