The Fifth World Water Assembly Equipment Exhibition offered a valuable opportunity for us to gain insights into advanced foreign technologies and practices in the water treatment industry. Over the past two decades, China's water treatment equipment sector has gradually matured. However, to match the technological standards of developed countries, it is essential to continuously enhance our R&D capabilities and strategically adopt and adapt foreign technologies—particularly those introduced from the late 1990s.
Currently, the gap between China’s water treatment equipment and that of other countries is more significant than the gap in watercraft technology. Similarly, the difference in theoretical research and specialized manufacturing remains greater than in general equipment. To elevate the overall level of water treatment in China, improving the quality and performance of water treatment equipment must be a top priority for the industry.
Engineering experience over many years has shown that the proper functioning of water treatment equipment is fundamental to achieving successful process execution. The quality and durability of this equipment directly influence the success of construction and long-term operation. Additionally, the cost of the equipment plays a crucial role in the total project budget. Innovations in water treatment equipment not only support the development of new technologies but also contribute to efficiency, sustainability, and system optimization. As a result, equipment has become the key factor in the success of water treatment projects, and this perspective is widely accepted within the industry.
Water treatment equipment is typically divided into general and special categories. General equipment includes pumps, fans, and valves, while special equipment focuses on specific water treatment processes. This category encompasses pollution control devices, sludge removal systems, aeration and mixing units, chemical dosing and disinfection equipment, and concentration and dewatering systems. In recent years, additional technologies such as membrane filtration, energy-saving systems, biogas recovery, water reuse, and sludge and solid waste treatment have been incorporated into the field.
Looking ahead, the development of water treatment equipment will focus on creating more advanced, specialized systems that emphasize humanization, environmental friendliness, and modernization. Key areas of emphasis in sewage treatment and recycling include: 1) Sludge management (e.g., thermal drying and incineration equipment), 2) Odor control (chemical and biological deodorization systems), 3) Disinfection (UV, ozone, and chlorine dioxide systems), 4) Water reuse (including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis units), 5) Energy-efficient technologies, and 6) Upgrades to traditional processing equipment.
In the water treatment industry, the process defines the requirements for equipment, and equipment ensures the successful implementation of the process. A growing trend in China is the shift from imported equipment to locally produced alternatives, which are becoming more sophisticated, user-friendly, and environmentally conscious. This evolution reflects the industry's modernization and contributes to cost savings, energy efficiency, and operational reliability.
After years of dedicated effort, China has made significant progress in establishing technical specifications, standards, and design practices for water treatment equipment. It is anticipated that with continued efforts during the "11th Five-Year Plan," the overall technical level of China’s water treatment equipment will reach international standards, further strengthening its position in the global market.
