On October 25th, the 2005 China Tire Resources Recycling and Utilization International Forum took place in Beijing. Organized by the China Tire Renovation and Utilization Association and the Ministry of Education's Circular Economy Innovation Base, the event brought together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss sustainable solutions for tire resource management. The forum focused on advancing the recycling and reuse of tire materials, exploring the development of relevant laws and policies, promoting advanced technologies, and setting industry standards. A key objective was to establish an efficient and comprehensive system for collecting and processing used tires. Over the past two decades, China has made notable progress in tire recycling. For instance, the production of waste tire rubber powder has reached world-class levels, large engineering tires have been successfully refurbished, and aircraft tire retreading has begun. However, despite these achievements, challenges remain. The current recycling rate is low, with high costs and inefficient collection systems. Small-scale recycling plants and oil refineries often operate without proper regulation, leading to environmental pollution. Additionally, there is a mismatch between the number of discarded tires and the availability of old ones for retreading, resulting in a low retreading rate. The use of fine rubber powder and industrial restructuring also need further improvement. Representatives from various government departments, including the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Commerce, and State Environmental Protection Administration, as well as foreign experts and over 300 industry professionals from both domestic and international tire recycling sectors, attended the event. The discussions aimed to address these issues and lay the foundation for a more sustainable and efficient tire recycling industry in China.
