It was reported that after a year of dedicated efforts, the Steel Research Institute of Pangang Group successfully completed the three-stage industrial testing and achieved success in the research project titled "Metallurgical Process Technology for High-Quality Automotive Gear Steel." This breakthrough marks a significant step forward in China's ability to produce high-performance gear steel domestically.
According to recent reports, with the steady growth of China’s automotive industry, the demand for automotive gear steel has been on the rise. However, due to the complex smelting and preparation process required for this type of steel, the performance and quality standards are extremely high. Currently, most of the gear steels used by major joint-venture automakers such as FAW-Volkswagen, Shanghai Volkswagen, Shanghai GM, Guangzhou Honda, Beijing Hyundai, and Tianjin FAW Toyota are still imported, highlighting the gap in domestic production capabilities.
In late 2004, the Panzhihua Iron and Steel Research Institute initiated the "Research on Metallurgical Process Technology for High-Quality Automotive Gear Steel." After a thorough analysis of the production conditions at Panzhihua Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., the research team focused on deoxidation and refining processes. They boldly explored a new method for producing high-quality automotive gear steel using converter smelting and continuous casting.
The latest test results show that the process is highly efficient, with precise control over chemical composition. In particular, the oxidation resistance of the slag during the ladle process has been effectively managed, and the total oxygen content in the slabs has reached a level that is among the best in the country. This achievement not only enhances the technical capability of the company but also brings it closer to meeting the stringent requirements of the automotive industry.
