It was just after 4:30 AM when the Schaumburg Fire Department got an urgent call about a house fire. The homeowner admitted they’d left something cooking on the stove, and it had ignited, spreading rapidly. As firefighters arrived at 808 Holyoke Court, they were greeted by thick smoke billowing out of the front door of the split-level home. The smoke lingered low in the cul-de-sac, making visibility challenging and even enveloping the engine parked in front of the house. Within minutes, the fire had engulfed the entire first floor, prompting the shift commander to upgrade the response to a MABAS Box Alarm. By the time crews reached the rear of the house, it was completely engulfed, with flames racing upward to the second floor and into the attic.
Access to the structure proved difficult as the stairway began to burn through, forcing firefighters to deploy nearly a dozen ground ladders around the house. Initial efforts focused on working off these ladders to pull the ceiling for access to the attic fire. Once safe entry into the second floor was established, crews could begin fighting the blaze from within. Multiple hand lines were utilized from every angle of the house to combat the growing inferno.
The two residents managed to escape unharmed, but unfortunately, their dog did not survive. The cold weather that morning, with temperatures in the mid-20s, caused water to freeze on the ground, adding another layer of challenge for responders.
Photographer Larry Shapiro arrived approximately 30 minutes into the incident and captured several images and a video. His comprehensive photo gallery can be viewed [here](http://shapirophotography.net/Fires%202011/SCHM%203-13.html). Schaumburg Engine 53, a 2000 E-ONE Hurricane, was the first unit on the scene. Other mutual aid resources included trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospect Heights, along with chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates.
As firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, ground ladders were strategically placed at all second-floor windows and at opposing corners of the roof for both access and egress. After the fire was brought under control, the extent of the damage became clear, with significant destruction visible throughout the interior of the home. Schaumburg Engine 51’s crew was among those who bravely entered the building to assist in knocking down the flames, while Elk Grove Truck 7 also played a crucial role as part of the mutual aid response.
The scene was a testament to the dedication and coordination of Schaumburg firefighters and their partners from neighboring departments. Despite the challenges posed by the fire’s rapid spread and the freezing conditions, the joint effort ensured that the situation was handled efficiently and effectively.
