Yesterday morning, I witnessed a significant fire that broke out in a vacant two-story building in Chicago Heights. It happened just after 11 AM in the 200 block of US Route 30. When the first responders arrived, they found a structure measuring 35 by 40 feet engulfed in heavy smoke. Investigators believe the fire may have been deliberately set, as it quickly spread and caused severe damage to the building, which housed apartments above an empty storefront.
The fire department from Chicago Heights was joined by assistance from several neighboring departments, including Matteson, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Steger, Crete, and Homewood. Their coordinated efforts were crucial in containing the blaze. As someone who was present at the scene, I captured some images that really capture the intensity of the situation.
One particularly striking moment was when elevated master streams from Matteson’s ladder and Chicago Heights’ tower ladder were deployed to douse the flames. The firefighters worked tirelessly, deploying hand lines and venting windows to control the fire's progress. It was clear how challenging the situation was, especially given the scale of the building and the intensity of the smoke and flames.
I also noticed a Chicago Heights firefighter skillfully maneuvering the master stream from the bucket of their 100-foot tower ladder. This kind of operation requires precision and teamwork, and it was inspiring to see how well everyone coordinated under pressure.
For those interested in more details, there’s a brief report from CBS Chicago you can check out [here]. Additionally, my friend Tim Olk, who was also on the scene, has put together a comprehensive gallery of photos that you can view [here].
As I walked away from the scene later that afternoon, I couldn’t help but reflect on the dedication of our local firefighters. It’s moments like these that remind us of the risks they take every day to protect our communities.
