Yesterday morning, I witnessed a significant fire that broke out in a vacant two-story building in Chicago Heights. It happened just after 11 AM in the 200 block of US Route 30. When the first responders arrived, they found a structure measuring 35 by 40 feet engulfed in heavy smoke. Investigators believe the fire may have been deliberately set, as it quickly spread and caused severe damage to the building, which housed apartments above an empty storefront. The fire department from Chicago Heights was joined by assistance from several neighboring departments, including Matteson, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Steger, Crete, and Homewood. Their coordinated efforts were crucial in containing the blaze. As someone who was present at the scene, I captured some images that really capture the intensity of the situation.
