From the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance website:

From June 19 to 25, 2016, around 70 children who have suffered burns will gather at Camp "I Am Me" in Ingleside, Illinois, for the 26th annual event. Organized by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) and held at YMCA Camp Duncan, this special camp offers burn survivors aged 8 to 16 a chance to enjoy typical summer camp activities, along with unique programs tailored to their specific needs. While it costs about $2,400 to send one child to camp, all participants attend for free, thanks to generous donations from individuals and organizations.

"These kids are burned in different ways — from hot water, chemicals, fire, or even electricity," says a spokesperson from IFSA. "They make up just a small fraction of the hundreds of Illinois children who suffer burns each year, but we work closely with hospital burn units to raise awareness and help more kids. Our mission is to offer this life-changing experience to every burn-injured child in the state."

Beyond fun and games, the camp includes sessions on character building, journaling, and therapeutic activities. These take place in a safe, supportive environment where kids can open up, share experiences, and build confidence. Many of them don’t have access to such resources in their own communities, making the camp an essential part of their healing journey.

"A lot of these kids feel isolated after their injuries," explains Zaleski, a volunteer with IFSA. "They might be teased or feel different because of their scars — both physically and emotionally. But at camp, they realize they’re not alone. It helps them feel empowered and gives them a sense of belonging that can last a lifetime."

Each year, over a third of the volunteers are past campers themselves, showing how deeply the program impacts lives. In addition, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, and business leaders also come together to support the camp, with nearly one volunteer for every camper.

On Wednesday, June 22, the community is invited to join the Appreciation Day event starting at 11:00 a.m. The day kicks off with a fire truck parade featuring sirens and equipment from across the state arriving at the camp. Afterward, there will be lunch at noon and a thank-you ceremony at 1:00 p.m. to honor donors, supporters, and volunteers. Later in the afternoon, campers will enjoy a Fun Fair with carnival games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, and plenty of prizes.
