For several months, we've been keeping a close eye on the evolving relationship between the Village of Barrington and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. You can read our previous coverage here, here, here, here, and here.
Recently, the *Daily Herald* reported that the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District is actively seeking to hire its own personnel, signaling a major shift in how emergency services are managed in the area.
According to Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District trustees, the once-theoretical questions about splitting responsibilities with the Barrington Fire Department have now become very real. Instead of asking “why?†the conversation has moved to “how?†This means the district — which operates as a separate taxing entity — is beginning the process of acquiring its own staff and equipment, rather than relying on contracts with the village.
District President Tom Rowan confirmed that requests for proposals have already been issued for 33 new employees, including a chief, who will be ready to take over from current Barrington Fire Department workers starting January 1st.
Originally established to serve only the Village of Barrington, the fire district covers a much larger area just outside the village, including parts of Barrington Hills, Inverness, Lake Barrington, South Barrington, and unincorporated areas of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties.
Fire Station 1 in Barrington will remain under the jurisdiction of the Barrington Fire Department, but a split would mean the fire district takes over Station 2 in Barrington Hills and Station 3. The agreement between the two agencies outlines an equal division of shared equipment, with the process set to begin with a coin flip, according to Rowan.
The decision to end their long-standing contract was announced last fall after district officials grew frustrated with the village’s failure to meet their staffing and equipment needs. However, Barrington Village President Karen Darch expressed hope that the relationship could still be salvaged, noting there's still time to work out any remaining issues.
Despite this, Rowan remains focused on the next step: deciding whether to call “heads†or “tails†to officially begin dividing the shared assets.
