October 14, 2020 – A new video showcases how the staff at Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG utilized the Elios 2 to enhance safety during the construction of a dam in Grimsel Pass, Switzerland. In this recent video, workers from KWO, a Swiss energy provider, explain how they managed to keep their teams out of harm's way by employing Flyability's Elios 2 drone to gather critical visual data while constructing the dam. The dam project is taking place in Grimsel Pass, an area located within the Bernese Alps at an altitude of 1.2 miles (1,900 meters), presenting challenging working conditions. During winter, from October to May, the road across the pass is shut down due to heavy snowfall and severe weather, meaning the dam construction can only happen during the warmer months. For the dam project, the KWO team had to perform a detailed visual inspection of a deep pit prior to installing an elevator. Instead of sending inspectors down manually, which would involve either rope access or a crane, they used the Elios 2 drone to capture all necessary visual data to confirm it was safe to proceed with the elevator installation. Pascal Reber, the Civil Engineering Site Manager at KWO, stated, "We're always on the lookout for new technologies that enable machines and robots to handle risky tasks without endangering human lives. The outstanding performance of the Elios 2 gives us confidence as we move forward with future projects, knowing our team remains safe." The Elios 2 proved particularly effective for this inspection thanks to its unique drone cage design, which allows it to bump into obstacles and still continue flying. This feature makes it perfect for tight or hazardous environments like inside boilers, pressure vessels, or, in this instance, a pit carved into the mountainside. Not only did the Elios 2 help ensure safety, but it also drastically cut down the time required for the inspection process and provided more flexibility in how the data was collected and shared among team members. Reber added, "A manual inspection of the pit would take three to four people a full week, but with the Elios 2, we accomplished the same task in just two hours. Manually, you'd start at the top and work your way down step-by-step, but with the drone, we could begin at the bottom and fly directly to the section we wanted to inspect, capturing high-quality visuals that we could later share with others on the team."
