At approximately 4:30 AM, the Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire. According to initial reports, the homeowner had left something unattended on the stove, which caught fire and rapidly spread throughout the home. One of the residents managed to escape but had to wake a neighbor to alert the fire department.
When the first responders arrived, they found heavy smoke billowing out of the front door of the split-level house located at 808 Holyoke Court. The smoke had settled low in the cul-de-sac, making visibility challenging. The fire had already engulfed the entire first floor when the first firefighting line was deployed. Within minutes, the incident commander upgraded the response to a MABAS Box Alarm due to the rapid spread of the flames. The rear of the house was completely involved, and the fire had extended to the second floor and attic.
Access to the house proved difficult as the staircase had been compromised by the fire, necessitating the use of nearly a dozen ground ladders around the building. Firefighters initially worked from outside using the ladders to access the attic until they could safely enter the second floor from within. Multiple handlines were utilized from all sides of the structure to combat the blaze.
The limited access to the property due to its location in a cul-de-sac posed additional challenges. Ground ladders were positioned at all second-floor windows and at opposite corners of the roof to facilitate both entry and exit for firefighters. Despite these efforts, one dog did not survive the fire. The cold temperatures, hovering in the mid-20s, caused water to freeze on the ground, adding another layer of complexity to the operation.
Photographer Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene about 30 minutes after the alarm was raised. He captured several images and a video documenting the event. A comprehensive photo gallery can be viewed [here](http://shapirophotography.net/Fires%202011/SCHM%203-13.html).
The first engine on the scene was Schaumburg Engine 53, a 2000 E-ONE Hurricane. Other mutual aid resources included trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospect Heights, along with chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates. Their coordinated efforts ensured that the situation was brought under control efficiently, though significant damage had already been done to the property.
The fire was eventually extinguished, leaving behind extensive damage that required further assessment. The collaborative effort between Schaumburg and surrounding departments highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in emergency situations. As daylight broke, firefighters continued their work to ensure the structure was safe and secure, marking the end of an intense early morning operation.
