Increased Demand for Nationwide Coils Following February Storm Affecting Central and Southern U.S.
The severe winter storm that swept through the central and southern parts of the United States brought freezing temperatures, ice, and snow, damaging numerous commercial HVAC coils in its wake. As the region continues to recover, businesses are urgently seeking replacements to restore their HVAC systems.
February's Arctic outbreak that hit the central U.S., especially Texas, was nothing short of historic. For days, sub-zero temperatures covered the area, leaving millions without power, heat, and water. Such an extreme cold snap took a toll on commercial HVAC systems, particularly the coils. These coils, not designed to endure prolonged sub-zero conditions, are now causing significant disruptions for businesses.
In response to this surge in demand, the coil manufacturing industry has been operating at full capacity, struggling to meet orders amidst additional supply chain challenges triggered by the storm. Since the event, we've seen a spike in requests for both our custom and OEM replacement coils. Businesses are prioritizing getting their HVAC systems back online as soon as possible, not only for comfort but also to maintain indoor air quality standards during the ongoing pandemic.

Preventing Coils from Freezing
In light of the February storm and the possibility of another late-winter storm hitting large parts of the country, we’ve received numerous queries from customers across the U.S. regarding coil freezing prevention.

Copper tube damage following coil freezing.
At what temperature do coils freeze?
The exact freezing temperature depends on several factors, such as:
- Water flow through the coil
- Whether the system is operational or not
- The percentage of outside air entering the unit
- Presence of glycol in the system, which provides additional freeze protection
What happens when a unit’s coil freezes?
When a coil freezes, the unit becomes non-functional.
What happens when a frozen coil thaws?
This situation leads to water leakage through the cracked tubes. Depending on the water flow and extent of the leaks, this can cause extensive damage.
Which coils are suitable for subzero temperatures?
Steam distribution coils are best suited for low temperatures. The internal distribution tube minimizes the risk of the outer condensate tube freezing.
Best Preventative Maintenance to Avoid Coil Freezing
The most reliable method to prevent coils from freezing involves proper freeze protection:
- Add a glycol-water mixture to the system. This lowers the freezing point of the fluid.
- Coils without freeze protection should be positioned downstream of heating coils.
- Use a Freezestat to detect sub-freezing air conditions around unprotected coils. This signals a heating malfunction and shuts down the system to protect the coil. Bypass pumps activate when outdoor air approaches freezing to circulate fluid through the coil at a set GPM, reducing the risk of freezing.
