According to IllinoisFireSafetyAlliance.com, from June 19 to 25, 2016, around 70 children who have suffered burns will gather for the 26th annual Camp "I Am Me" in Ingleside, Illinois. Hosted by YMCA Camp Duncan and organized by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA), this special camp offers burn survivors aged 8 to 16 a unique experience that combines traditional camp activities with tailored programs addressing their emotional and physical needs. While it costs about $2,400 to send one child to camp, all participants attend free of charge thanks to generous donations.
"Burns can happen in many ways — from hot water and chemicals to fire and electricity," explains a representative from IFSA. "These kids are just a small part of the hundreds of Illinois children who suffer burns every year. Our mission is to raise awareness through partnerships with hospital burn units and ensure every child has access to this life-changing opportunity."
Beyond the usual camp fun, participants take part in character-building exercises, journaling, and therapeutic sessions. These activities are designed to help them heal emotionally and build confidence in a safe, supportive environment. For many, this kind of support isn’t available locally, making the camp even more vital.
"Many kids feel isolated after a burn injury, especially if they're teased or misunderstood at school," says Zaleski, a camp organizer. "But here, they find a community where they can be themselves without fear. The impact of this experience often lasts a lifetime."
Each year, over a third of the camp's volunteers are former campers, showing how deeply the program affects those who participate. In addition, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, and business leaders also give their time — often one volunteer for each camper.
On Wednesday, June 22, the camp will host an Appreciation Day starting at 11:00 a.m. with a thrilling fire apparatus parade featuring sirens and emergency vehicles from across the state. Following the parade, there will be lunch at noon and a special ceremony at 1:00 p.m. to honor donors, supporters, and volunteers. Later in the day, campers will enjoy a Fun Fair filled with games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, and lots of prizes — a perfect way to celebrate their journey and the people who make it possible.
