Captain Jake Ringering of the Godfrey Fire Protection District passed away at the age of 37 after being struck by a falling brick wall while responding to a residential fire on Culp Lane. His funeral services have been scheduled for Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, and multiple fundraising efforts are underway to support his family.
Ringering was killed during the incident on Tuesday, and fellow firefighter Luke Warner was seriously injured and underwent surgery on Wednesday. The cause of the fire at 4604 Culp Lane in Bethalto is still under investigation and is expected to continue through next week.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 11, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. A walk-through by members of the Godfrey Fire Protection District will take place at 6 p.m. that evening.
The funeral service is set for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, with Reverend Jeremy Paulin officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jake Ringering Family through Carrolton Bank, located at 120 Homer Adams Parkway, Alton, Illinois, 62002.
Several community fundraisers have also been organized. These include events at the Godfrey McDonald’s from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Bakers & Hale from 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11, and Roma’s Pizza in Bethalto from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13. Additional donation stations are available at police departments in Alton, Bethalto, East Alton, Jerseyville, and Wood River.
