This afternoon (Thursday, October 6, 2016), the Bedford Park Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at 6650 S. Oak Park Avenue. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from a two-story building that housed a recycling center. First-arriving engine companies quickly deployed their attack lines, while Tower 709 and Truck 31 extended their master streams onto the roof to begin suppression efforts. Inside, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and heat, making visibility very limited.
Multiple handlines were used to control and eventually extinguish the fire. As the incident progressed, MABAS 10 MVU was brought in to assist with ventilation and to clear out the remaining smoke from the building. The fire was under control by the time the last of the apparatus left the scene.
Josh Boyajian captured several photos from the scene, including shots of the Pierce tower ladder, engine companies, and firefighters working to ventilate the building. These images provide a visual record of the challenging conditions faced by first responders during this incident.
