Donald E. Long, a respected figure in Glenview, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2021, at the age of 93. He was surrounded by his family and left behind a legacy of love and dedication. Donald was married to Mary Long (nee Rieb) for 66 wonderful years, and together they raised two daughters, Linda (married to Dennis Burmeister) and Cheryl (married to Martin Haugen). Don is survived by his four grandchildren—Bryan (married to Erin), Matthew (married to Laura), Christopher, and Emma (engaged to Travis Toliver)—as well as his great-granddaughter, Elaine "Ellie." He also leaves behind his brother Melvin (preceded in death by his wife Lois) and the memory of his sister Virginia (preceded in death by her husband Alfred Winkleman). Don's journey began in Glenview, where he spent his entire life. An alumnus of Oakton Community College and Southern Illinois University, he was also a proud U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. His commitment to public service was evident throughout his career, starting as a volunteer firefighter for the Glenbrook Rural Fire District before becoming one of its founding members and eventually rising to the position of Fire Chief. Don's contributions extended beyond firefighting; he was deeply involved with the Joseph Sesterhenn Glenview American Legion Post #166, serving as its Past Commander. Additionally, he held leadership roles at the Glenview History Center and the US Navy League’s Glenview Council. A man of many talents and interests, Don found joy in volunteering at the Wagner Farm in Glenview, a place close to his heart since he grew up on what is now Flick Park. His involvement with the community didn’t stop there—he was an active member of the Glenview Sunrise Rotary Club, Glenview Naval Air Museum Board of Directors, and Glenview Park District Starlite Singers. Don even participated in Civil War reenactments and coordinated teams for Rebuilding Together for several years. For his efforts, he was honored with Glenview Citizen of the Year in 1994 and named Alumni of the Year at Oakton Community College. Faith played a significant role in Don's life, and he remained a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. There, he served in various capacities, including Chairman of the Congregation, Chairman of the Property Commission, and Chairman of the Cemetery Board. He also sang in the church choir and participated in numerous theatrical productions put on by the congregation. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, located at 1240 Waukegan Road in Glenview. On Thursday, September 23, there will be another visitation beginning at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, situated at 1850 Chestnut Avenue in Glenview. Interment will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Don can make donations to either the Glenview History Center (address: 1121 Waukegan Road, Glenview, IL 60025) or the Glenview Naval Air Museum (address: 2040 Lehigh Avenue, Glenview, IL 60025). Thank you so much for your kind words, Drew. It's been such a privilege to know someone like Don, whose life touched so many people in Glenview and beyond.
