It was a quick response, especially considering the frigid conditions. By the time I arrived, the 17th Battalion Chief had already been dispatched to a fire reported on the 5700 block of South Indiana Avenue. En route, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received calls about people trapped on the second floor, prompting the response to be escalated to a Still and Box alarm.
Engine 84, which was just five blocks away, reached the scene in under two minutes. They found flames engulfing the second floor of a three-story, 30-by-70-foot ordinary structure—a six-unit apartment building. Fortunately, the fire stayed confined to a single unit, sparing the rest of the building from extensive damage.
By the time I got there, Truck 51 was already hoisting their ladder to the roof. Within minutes, the fire was extinguished. Thankfully, all search efforts came up empty, meaning no one was inside when the fire broke out. Seven adults and six children were displaced, but thankfully, a family cat survived—though it looked lifeless at first. As I left, I saw the soaked and soot-covered pet being handed back to its relieved owner, who must have thought it was gone for good. The cat perked up soon after, proving quite resilient.
The responding companies included Engine 84, Engine 47, Truck 51, and Truck 30. Box engines 50 and 16 also showed up to assist. I managed to snap a few photos, including one of Engine 50, which happens to be the oldest active engine in the fleet.

As always, these moments remind me how brave our firefighters are, especially in such challenging conditions. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.
