In recent years, the valve industry in Yuhuan County, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province has faced significant challenges due to rising global non-ferrous metal prices and intense market competition. Nearly 200 local valve companies have fallen into losses, while many others are struggling with narrow profit margins, causing a general downturn in the sector. In contrast, Wenzhou, located across the sea from Yuhuan, has maintained a more robust development trend. The industrial valves produced there are known for their higher technological content and added value compared to civilian valves. In the first half of this year, the entire valve industry in Wenzhou experienced strong growth, with total sales reaching 9 billion yuan—an increase of 29% year-on-year. Some companies even reported growth rates exceeding 50%. Wenzhou is home to approximately 1,560 pump manufacturers, including 1,200 valve companies and 360 pump manufacturers. Among them, 110 are involved in valve casting, and 70 are engaged in pipeline support. These businesses are mainly concentrated in areas such as Yongbei Town, Longbei District, Longan District, Tangxia Town, Yueqing Town, and industrial zones like the Wenzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone and Lucheng Industrial Zone. Their products not only serve key domestic industries such as oil, chemical, metallurgy, and power but are also exported to over 30 countries, including the United States and European nations. According to the Wenzhou Pump and Valve Industry Association, the total output value of the industry reached 20 billion yuan in 2005, up 25% year-on-year. Sales revenue hit 18.6 billion yuan, an increase of 26%, while exports rose to 1.65 billion yuan, up 21%. The industry holds more than 37% of the national market share. Over the past few years, Wenzhou’s valve companies have focused on technological innovation. For instance, in 2005, companies like Teflon Group and Zhejiang Flumet Valve invested over 1 billion yuan in upgrading their facilities, expanding factory space by more than 500,000 square meters, and importing advanced CNC machines and technologies. This led to improved product quality and the introduction of high-tech solutions. Companies like Bethel Valve Group and the Zhejiang Pump Valve Quality Inspection Center have also invested in state-of-the-art testing labs, enhancing their capabilities. Notable innovations include Zhejiang Huadong Valve’s high-temperature, high-pressure double-sealing valve, which solves leakage issues in nuclear power stations, and Zhejiang Wuzhou Valve’s massive 3-meter diameter, 20-ton butterfly valve—the largest in China. Additionally, the Wenzhou Pump & Valve Engineering Research Institute, established through collaboration between Lanzhou University of Technology, the Wenzhou municipal government, and Yongjia County government, is now operational. Zhejiang China Huaxia Valve successfully developed an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient ball wedge needle valve, which is now in mass production. In 2005, the Wenzhou Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision reported a 100% pass rate for submersible pumps and a 98.6% pass rate for industrial valves. As energy conservation and environmental protection become central to future development, Wenzhou's valve industry is accelerating its innovation efforts, adjusting product structures, and exploring new growth opportunities. To further establish itself as a leading manufacturing base for pumps and valves, Wenzhou Pump & Valve Co., Ltd. allocates over 5% of its annual sales to R&D, resulting in a continuous flow of new products. According to Huang Zuoxing, president of the Wenzhou Valve Association, “Previously, one train valve was worth 1 million. Now, selling two valves can be worth 1 million. The difference in technological innovation has greatly boosted profits.” In Yubei Town, Yongjia County, the valve industry currently has 213 provincial-level new products, 17 national-level new products, and 162 patents. In the first half of the year, the total industrial output reached 41 billion yuan, up 25% year-on-year. The valve industry has become a key pillar of the local economy. Wenzhou is transitioning from being the "Hometown of Pumps and Valves" to the "Capital of Pumps and Valves." With over 60% of qualified suppliers for major projects like Sinopec, PetroChina, and power companies, the city is gaining recognition. Recently, experts from nearly 100 Chinese pump and valve companies visited Wenzhou and concluded that with continued technological advancement, the industry will enter its most promising phase in the next five years. It is projected that by 2010, the industry’s output value will reach 50 billion yuan, accounting for one-fifth of the city’s total industrial output.
