This afternoon around 3 p.m., the Waukegan Fire Department responded to a working structure fire at a large strip mall located on the 2300 block of Grand Avenue. First-arriving units discovered smoke and flames coming from the roofline of the 15-unit strip mall, which also included a large attached medical building.
Chief Bridges expressed his pride in the firefighters who quickly contained the rapidly spreading fire, preventing what could have been a much worse outcome. The strong sense of community was evident as local residents helped move vehicles that were blocking access to the mall. Firefighters used aggressive tactics to stop the fire from spreading to the medical building and surrounding businesses, with over half of the shops reopening within two hours. While there was some damage, the situation could have been far worse. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The department would like to thank the neighboring fire departments for their assistance, as well as the Waukegan Police Department for managing traffic and ensuring scene safety during rush hour.
Waukegan Fire Marshal Lenzi is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Waukegan firefighters were called to 2323 Grand Avenue this afternoon after a roofing crew accidentally started a fire that caused significant damage to the roof, facade, and businesses below. The incident was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm, with additional resources from North Chicago and Gurnee arriving on scene, along with support from multiple nearby towns. The fire was fully under control within about 40 minutes.
Numerous fire trucks, including a Pierce quint and a KME engine, were seen responding to the scene. Local photographers captured several images of the emergency, showing firefighters working diligently to bring the blaze under control. The quick response and coordination between departments played a key role in limiting the damage and keeping the community safe.
