Recently, the desulfurization system of Unit 3 at Huaneng Group's Xindian Power Plant successfully completed a 168-hour trial operation. During this period, the desulfurization efficiency consistently remained between 95% and 96.7%, demonstrating excellent performance. Once the desulfurization systems for both units of the second phase are fully operational, annual sulfur dioxide emissions are expected to decrease by approximately 23,450 tons, significantly contributing to environmental protection efforts.
The desulfurization technology employed is a wet magnesium oxide method, making it the largest such system in China. The by-product, magnesium sulfate, can be further processed through calcination to produce sulfur dioxide and magnesium oxide. Sulfur dioxide can then be used as a key raw material for manufacturing sulfuric acid, while magnesium oxide can be recycled as a desulfurizing agent. This closed-loop process not only enhances resource utilization but also reduces waste.
Moreover, due to the high reactivity of magnesium oxide, the system achieves lower initial investment and operating costs compared to traditional limestone-gypsum wet desulfurization methods, which often face issues like secondary pollution and high expenses. This project marks a significant advancement in large-scale flue gas desulfurization technology for coal-fired power units, setting a new benchmark for efficiency and sustainability.
Magnesium oxide is unevenly distributed globally, with major reserves found in Laizhou, Shandong, and Liaoning provinces. Huaneng Xin Power Plant, located in Zibo, is strategically close to the Laizhou magnesium mine. Utilizing magnesium oxide for desulfurization not only lowers costs but also minimizes environmental impact from by-product disposal. Additionally, chemical companies benefit from using sulfur dioxide obtained through magnesium sulfate calcination to produce sulfuric acid, reducing reliance on imported sulfur materials and cutting production costs. This creates a sustainable industrial chain, enhancing economic and environmental benefits.
