Recently, Huaneng Group's Xindian Power Plant Unit No. 3 desulfurization system has successfully completed a 168-hour trial operation, achieving stable performance with desulfurization efficiency consistently between 95% and 96.7%. This marks a significant step forward in the plant’s environmental protection efforts. Once the desulfurization systems for both units of the second phase are fully operational, annual sulfur dioxide emissions are expected to decrease by approximately 23,450 tons, significantly contributing to cleaner air and better environmental management. The desulfurization technology employed is a wet magnesium oxide method, making it the largest such system in China. The by-product, magnesium sulfate, can be further processed through calcination to produce sulfur dioxide and magnesium oxide. Sulfur dioxide can then be used to manufacture sulfuric acid, an essential industrial raw material, while magnesium oxide can be recycled as a desulfurizing agent. This closed-loop system not only enhances resource utilization but also reduces waste and environmental impact. Compared to traditional "limestone-gypsum" wet desulfurization methods, this approach offers lower initial investment and operating costs due to the high reactivity of magnesium oxide. It also avoids common issues like secondary pollution and high maintenance expenses, setting a new benchmark for large-scale coal-fired power unit flue gas desulfurization. Geographically, magnesium oxide is unevenly distributed, with major deposits located in Laizhou, Shandong, and Liaoning provinces. Huaneng Xin Power Plant, situated in Zibo, benefits from its proximity to these mines, which helps reduce desulfurization costs and minimizes environmental risks associated with by-product disposal. Additionally, chemical companies can utilize sulfur dioxide obtained from magnesium sulfate calcination to produce sulfuric acid, cutting down on imported sulfur resources and lowering production costs. This creates a sustainable industrial chain that supports both environmental and economic goals.
