According to foreign media reports, Nissan, Japan’s second-largest automaker, recently announced that it will invest 100 million euros (about US$127 million) in the production of electric vehicles at the Barcelona plant in Spain. In 2013, Nissan will start production of the e-NV200, a pure electric small business vehicle.

An e-mail statement issued by the Nissan Company stated that the e-NV200 will be the second electric car to be launched after the talks, and will strive to become the largest light commercial vehicle manufacturer in 2016.

Andy Palmer, executive vice president of Nissan, said in a statement that the e-NV200 is a spacious and practical multi-function compact commercial vehicle with a standard pure electric drive that will result in zero CO2 emissions.

The Barcelona plant is currently also producing the gasoline version of the NV200, which has sold about 100,000 cars. Nissan therefore chose to produce the electric version of the e-NV200 at this plant, which will create 700 jobs. It is reported that the car will only be produced in Spain and will be launched in various markets from 2014.

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, by 2020, the market share of plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles will account for 9%, and by 2030 this proportion may rise to 22%, which is approximately 4 million vehicles.
