Sunday morning at around 6 AM, Chicago witnessed a significant commercial fire break out at 5614 W. Grand Avenue. Steve Redick and Dan McInerney were both on the scene, capturing the intensity of the blaze and sharing their images. I embedded an iframe here for those who wish to view the footage, though it's currently empty for now. You can expect updates as we gather more details. Attached below is a photograph taken by Steve Redick showing heavy flames consuming the auto body shop on Grand Avenue. As the situation unfolded, the fire quickly spread through the roof structure, which was supported by a truss system. Two distinct structural collapses occurred during my time there, although only the roof collapsed outward—there was no apparent collapse of the parapets or bearing walls. I’m curious whether fire-resistant cuts were made on the truss ends to prevent such incidents. Additionally, I managed to capture some shots of Engine 43 deploying a ground ladder to the roof of the adjacent exposure building for a point-of-vantage firefighting operation. Overall, it was quite an interesting fire incident, especially given that shift changeovers were happening simultaneously. You’ll notice firefighters in varying states of readiness due to this timing. I’ve also included a link to a short video featuring radio traffic from the scene that I recorded. In another image, you can see two tower ladders working alongside multiple handlines and multi-versals. Engine 68, as the first-due engine, had a deck gun and several handlines actively flowing to combat the inferno. Dan McInerney added his own observations, noting that the affected building was a single-story truss-roofed auto body shop measuring approximately 75 feet by 100 feet, engulfed in flames. The exposure building in sector 2 was a one-story structure, roughly 25 feet by 100 feet, also fully ablaze. He mentioned that Engine 117 deployed two lines off its apparatus to the roof of the building directly west of the exposure structure, conducting operations from a point of vantage. Tower 35 also had its main line positioned similarly. Another striking image captures the intense firefighting efforts from the rear angle, showcasing how heavy the fire burned through the roof. Firefighters from Engine 117 climbed a ground ladder to access the roof of a neighboring building in Sector 2, aiming to douse the flames effectively. As the incident progressed, Dan noted that the two-story residence to the west had two 2-1/2-inch lines operating on the roof, along with a 2-1/2-inch and a 1-3/4-inch line extending out of the second-floor windows. More detailed video links, comprehensive photo galleries, and additional images will be shared in a follow-up article as we continue to update our coverage of this event.
