The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a serious fire at a townhouse on Ottawa Court in the Tahoe Village complex shortly before 11 PM. Multiple calls were received about a fire on the exterior of a four-unit building, but upon arrival, officers corrected the address to 573 Custer Court. As units approached, the incident was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire due to the severity reported by dispatch. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames engulfing the exterior wall, which had already spread to the first and second floors as well as the attic. The intensity of the fire was visible from miles away, with the header clearly seen against the dark sky. A mayday was called for a firefighter on the second floor, who suffered a knee injury but managed to exit the scene on his own and declined medical attention. Before a permanent water supply could be established, firefighters used tank water to suppress the exterior fire. Mutual aid companies from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Long Grove were dispatched under the Code 4 alarm, while additional units from Rolling Meadows, Des Plaines, Prospect Heights, North Maine, Glenview, Northbrook, and Elk Grove Township arrived under the Box Alarm. A second alarm brought reinforcements from Morton Grove, Niles, Lake Zurich, Palatine, Deerfield, and Northfield. The fire remained confined to the end unit, with only minor smoke and drywall damage in the adjacent unit. It is believed that the fire started when a smoker was placed too close to the structure, possibly causing an ignition. Firefighters conducted an overhaul near the point of origin, where a gas grille and smoker were stored. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk both covered the event.
