Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, and Mount Prospect were called to 1929 N. Spruce Terrace in Arlington Heights around 8:20 AM on Thursday, February 4, 2021, after a house fire was reported. As the crews responded, they were informed that two residents might still be inside, and neighbors had mentioned that the home had severe hoarding conditions. Upon arrival, Engine 2 confirmed flames at the rear of the house. They quickly connected to a hydrant located down the street, while Palatine Engine 83 set up in front of the property. Firefighters entered the structure to search for the occupants and successfully located two adults. Both individuals were immediately taken out and provided with medical attention before being transported by ambulance. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, but crews continued to work on extinguishing hot spots and smoldering embers throughout the cluttered interior. Unfortunately, it was later confirmed that neither of the two occupants who were rescued from the home survived the incident. This tragic event highlights the dangers of living in homes with extreme clutter, which can complicate emergency responses and put lives at risk. Local authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire. An image of the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, shows the aftermath of the blaze.
