Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
A 28-year-old former firefighter from Winthrop Harbor, Keith Kauppi, is currently held on a $1 million bail. He faces serious charges of aggravated arson and attempted murder in connection with an alleged attempt to set his 70-year-old aunt, Kathleen Kauppi, up for a series of fires that occurred in both Winthrop Harbor and Pleasant Prairie.
According to authorities, Kauppi confessed to starting a fire at his aunt’s home in December and another in June, during which she suffered burns ranging from mild to severe. The incident led to his arrest, and while the aunt was initially charged with arson after being framed by her nephew, those charges were dropped once he admitted to the crime.
Joel Brumlik, chief of the Winthrop Harbor Police Department, explained that the fires were part of a larger scheme. According to Brumlik, Kauppi had been forging checks from his aunt’s bank account, and the arson was an attempt to cover up these thefts and potentially eliminate her as a witness.
Kauppi was fired from his position at the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department in February after being accused of check fraud. At that time, his aunt chose not to press charges. However, the situation escalated when Kauppi allegedly tried to forge checks again this week, leading to his interrogation and eventual confession.
Earlier this week, the aunt had moved in with her brother, but a fire broke out at the house. According to a Pleasant Prairie Police complaint, Kathleen Kauppi was sleeping on a couch in the living room when a loud crash woke her nephew and his parents. The nephew told investigators he ran downstairs and found the couch on fire. He claimed to have thrown water on it and helped carry the burned items outside. The living room reportedly smelled strongly of gasoline.
Police confirmed the presence of gasoline on the couch, a burned blanket, and scorched clothing. The aunt reportedly told officers she had not started the fire and refused to speak to her relatives afterward. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the full extent of Kauppi’s actions.
Following his confession, Kauppi accompanied police to the scene where he revealed where he had stored the gasoline used in the fire. His case has sparked concern within the community and raised questions about the motives behind such a dangerous and calculated act.
