Tragic news has emerged from Toledo on Sunday, as two firefighters lost their lives while responding to a fire at an apartment building in North Toledo. This marks the first time since 1981 that the city has seen firefighter fatalities during an active blaze. Stephen A. Machcinski, 42, and James Dickman, 31, died after sustaining injuries while battling the fire at 528 Magnolia Street. Private Machcinski had served for over 15 years with the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department, while Private Dickman was just months into his career, having joined in September. His entire class of 51 recruits was sworn in on September 3, but they have yet to hold a graduation ceremony. Both men were part of the team that entered a six-unit apartment building after the fire was reported at around 2:47 p.m. At a press conference held later that evening, Fire Chief Luis Santiago expressed deep sorrow, stating that both firefighters suffered fatal injuries inside the burning structure. According to radio communications, the two were lost in the flames for several minutes before being found by other firefighters. They were pulled from the building and given immediate medical attention before being rushed to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. Mayor D. Michael Collins also addressed the tragedy, highlighting the bravery of first responders who "run into harm’s way instead of running away." He noted that Mr. Dickman’s parents, who live in Mansfield, Ohio, were escorted to Toledo by the Ohio Highway Patrol on Sunday. Photos from the scene show firefighters working desperately to rescue the injured, with one being carried down the stairs amid thick smoke. Emergency crews spent the next two hours dousing the smoldering building, with occasional flames still visible from the roof. The building, which dates back to 1877, has a long history of fires. Owned by Ray and Mariam Abouarab since 1992, it has been involved in multiple incidents over the past two decades, including fires in 1996, 1998, and 2002. The property is valued at $101,500 today. The building houses six residential units behind the Huron Market carryout. The owner, who witnessed the fire, confirmed that seven residents were living there, and no one was injured. He recently spent about $2,500 to fix plumbing issues caused by the recent cold snap. Another property owned by Mr. Abouarab, a five-unit building at 809 North Huron Street, caught fire twice within six months in 2002 and 2003. It was sold in 2007. This heartbreaking event has left the community in shock, as the names of these two brave firefighters are now added to the list of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service. Thanks, Chris.
