Arlington Heights firefighters responded to a call at 2150 S. Goebberts Road on Wednesday afternoon after reports of smoke in the hallway of a two-story apartment complex measuring approximately 45 by 200 feet. As units were en route, the police department reported black smoke coming from one of the units, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Code 4—indicating a working fire. Although the first arriving unit, Arlington Heights Engine 3, initially found nothing visible from their approach, they encountered smoke upon entering the building and immediately pulled a pre-connected line. Shortly after, Mt. Prospect Engine 12 arrived and helped establish a water supply before entering the structure. The fire remained confined to a single unit and was quickly brought under control.

Larry Shapiro arrived near the end of the firefighting operation and shared a few photos. More images can be viewed in a gallery here.

The response was swift and well-coordinated, with both departments working together efficiently. It’s always reassuring to see how prepared the crews are, especially with the modern equipment they're using. The fact that the fire was contained so quickly suggests that the initial report of smoke led to an early intervention, which likely prevented more serious damage. Residents were not harmed, and the situation appears to be under control. These kinds of incidents remind us of the importance of quick response times and effective communication between emergency services.
